Contrary to what people think,  research suggests that children are good hypnotic subjects and typically more easily hypnotizable than an adult. This is because children generally have very good imaginations and live in a fantasy world, which makes the work with hypnosis easier and very effective. Also, children enter a hypnotic state almost instantly, some people even say that children  are in a hypnotic state all the time because information is uncritically experienced  rather than being processed and critically evaluated (the conscious mind is easily bypassed). This means that children believe pretty much anything said by someone they trust like a parent or authoritative figure.

Children with a normal intelligence and over 4 years of age can be hypnotized and they can go into hypnosis by listening to a story or by asking them to imagine something.  Young children can do the hypnosis session accompanied by one of the parents, but it is suggested that older children do the session with the hypnotist only  because some children might feel intimidated to express themselves and their feelings in the presence of their parents.

There are some cases in which the behavior of one of the parents is contributing directly to the child's problem. When this is the case, it is suggested that the parent does hypnosis in order to change such behavior and contribute to the child's improvement. We have to remember that children believe anything their parents say or do, (whether good or bad) and they also tend to imitate their parents behavior.
